Lafufu, Labubu & The Truth About Collecting Toys in Late Capitalism

Lafufu is my new series of wall sculptures based on the viral Labubu toy. Cute on the surface, critical underneath. I break down why blind box culture works, how hype fuels collecting, and why adults keep chasing surprise toys like slot machines.

These pieces are laser cut, hand painted, assembled in my studio in Berlin. Each one comes in a random color, just like the toy lottery that inspired it. No choices, only chance.

The Lafufu series is a reinterpretation of the viral collectible toy Labubu — turned into a wall sculpture that blurs the line between art, fandom, and commodity. Each piece is designed, laser-cut, painted, and assembled by hand in Berlin.

Just like the blind-box toys that inspired it, every Lafufu comes in a randomly assigned colorway. You don’t choose the color — chance does. It’s part of the game: a playful reminder of how hype, scarcity, and surprise fuel today’s culture of consumption.

Cute, ironic, and unapologetically critical, Lafufu invites you to question what you collect… and why.
